Colour,
everywhere.
Twenty-two years ago somebody handed us a roll of grey paper and told us to photograph forty children against it. We politely declined and have been doing it in colour ever since.
Grey is a choice. We just made a different one.
Every childcare photographer in Sydney owns the same three backdrops. Grey, slightly warmer grey, and the blue one that's supposed to look like a sky and never does.
We own about forty. Hot pink, marigold, lime, violet, that particular blue you only get on a pool tile. We pick one for each child based on what they're wearing and what they're like, and the photograph comes out looking like a person rather than a passport application.
Three things we do differently
A colour for every child
We bring the whole kit and choose per child, not per centre. Redheads get greens and teals, kids in navy uniforms get marigold, and anyone in a dinosaur shirt gets whatever makes the dinosaurs sing.
Nobody says cheese
We have never once asked a child to say cheese and we're not going to start. We talk to them, we're a bit ridiculous, and we photograph what happens. It takes longer and it works far better.
Every frame, in colour and in black and white
You get both versions of everything, because sometimes the colour is the whole point and sometimes you want it quiet. No extra charge, no separate pack.

That's when the new season starts and it runs right through to December. We work across the lower north shore, the inner west and the eastern suburbs — tell us roughly how many children and which month suits, and we'll tell you what's left.
